E-rate and Classroom Broadband Access

View CoSN's Comments to the FCC about Modernizing the E-rate

CoSN is an enthusiastic supporter of modernizing the E-rate. Devices and opportunities for personal learning are proliferating, but without strong broadband access nationwide, we won't be able to create true educational transformation. Modernizing the E-rate and increasing its funding are the crucial steps we need to take to ensure broadband is set up to thrive today and in the future.

Last week, CoSN submitted a response to the Wireline Competition Bureau's request for focused comment regarding the FCC's E-rate rulemaking; you can follow along by reading the full text of our response. CoSN's recommendations for strengthening the E-rate include:

1. Improve the program's cost effectiveness by strengthening USAC

2. Use the $2 billion identified in the FCC's Public Notice to help applicants with equipment and software

3. Establish a formal process for evaluating estimated funding

E-rate reform is in the works, but still a long way from finalized. Stay tuned for more updates from the CoSN Advocacy Network.
